Genzyme Genetics Offers $17,500 Supplemental Scholarship at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
Genzyme Genetics offers a full scholarship valued at $9,000 to cover tuition and fees and a monthly stipend valued at $8,500 to selected Cytogenetics students at The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCSA) at San Antonio. Up to 4 scholarships are available for each academic year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Admission to the B.S. or Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program in Cytogenetics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
- Entering overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater
- Award recipient of the $1,000 Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship by UTHSCSA for that academic year (this award will give student eligibility for In-State Tuition)
Selection Criteria
- Previous academic performance
- Knowledge of and commitment to the profession of Cytogenetics
- Commitment to and interest in working for Genzyme Genetics’ Santa Fe laboratory as a Cytogenetic Technologist post-graduation
- Scholarship Interview
- Authorization to work within the United States
Application and Selection Procedures
Applicants for the Genzyme Genetics Supplemental Scholarship must:
- Complete and submit the Genzyme Genetics Supplemental Scholarship Application (PDF)
- Copies of all submitted materials, including application and essay for the $1,000 Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship awarded by UTHSCSA
- Complete and submit a one-page essay on your interest in working for Genzyme Genetics and why you believe you would be a good candidate for employment with the Genzyme Genetics’ laboratory in Santa Fe, New Mexico
- Submit copies of college/university transcripts (official transcripts are not necessary)
- Participate in a selection interview, if invited
Scholarship Award
The scholarship consists of a scholarship award of $9,000 to cover tuition and fees for the degree or certificate program. Scholarship funds will be distributed by check which will be made out to the University of Texas Health Science Center, but mailed directly to the scholarship recipient.
In addition, scholarship recipients will be awarded a stipend of $500 per month while enrolled in the academic program at the UT Health Science Center (September, October, November, December and July) and $1,000 per month while on clinical rotation at Genzyme Genetics in Santa Fe, New Mexico (January through June).
Stipend payments are made directly to the scholarship recipient by Genzyme Genetics. The entire Supplemental Scholarship award package totals approximately $17,500 per student.
The scholarship award is considered taxable income to the student.
Conditions of Award
Students awarded the Genzyme Genetics Supplemental Scholarship are required to perform their clinical rotation at Genzyme Genetics in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Upon receiving an offer of at-will employment with Genzyme Genetics in Santa Fe following graduation, scholarship recipients must also agree to remain employed by Genzyme for a period of two years following graduation.
Scholarship recipients will be contractually obligated to repay scholarship and stipend funds if they do not complete the post-baccalaureate or degree program, or if they fail to remain employed with Genzyme Genetics’ Santa Fe laboratory for a period of two years following graduation.
Application Deadline
All application materials are due to Diane Marbourg at Genzyme Genetics no later than July 1. Scholarship recipients will be notified of selection by July 30th.
