Genetic Counseling

With the rapid advances in the genetic diagnostic testing industry, the role of a genetic counselor has never been so critical. The genetic counselor supports both physicians and patients by identifying genetic risks to a pregnant woman’s fetus and communicating this information in understandable terms. Genetic counselors are also available to consult with patients and couples prior to beginning a pregnancy.

At Genzyme Genetics, we place great value upon genetic counseling services. That is why we take pride in having the largest, nationwide network of genetic counselors in the United States.

Our genetic counselors address a number of key topics.

Genetic Risk Assessment

In a counseling session the genetic counselor:

  • Evaluates the patient’s prenatal genetic questionnaire
  • Obtains additional relevant medical and pregnancy history
  • Constructs a three-generation pedigree
  • Reviews the medical records provided, including genetic screening results

Patient Support

Based on the prenatal genetic risk assessment, the genetic counselor:

  • Discusses the risk to the fetus of any applicable genetic disorders and inheritance patterns
  • Discusses overall genetic risk to the pregnancy
  • Discusses risks, benefits and limitations of appropriate standard genetic testing options
  • Answers or refers patient questions during the session and is available subsequently by telephone

Clinician Support

To assist the referring physician with coordination of appropriate genetic services, the genetic counselor:

  • Implements standards of care for genetic counseling
  • Facilitates patient informed consent
  • Provides a summary report of the genetic consultation
  • Answers questions about specific genetic conditions and risks to the pregnancy

Quality Controls

Genetic counseling sessions are subject to rigorous quality controls, including:

  • Standardized clinical practice guidelines
  • Continuous quality improvement program
  • Interactive clinical information system
  • Medical geneticist review of all counseling charts

Clinical Expertise

All of our genetic counselors are board certified or active candidates. Genetic counselors are certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. All of Genzyme Genetics medical geneticists are board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics. This multidisciplinary network of genetic professionals has specialty training in:
